As COVID hit the world in the spring of 2020 so the standard orthodoxy around SAT or ACT testing went out of the window as colleges declared themselves Test Optional, meaning that students could choose if they wanted to submit test scores and that their chances of acceptance wouldn’t be impacted if they didn’t.

Starting in fall 2024, Brown University will require students to submit SAT or ACT scores. The university also announced it will continue to offer an Early Decision option and maintain legacy preferences. Roughly half of Brown's recent entering classes have come in through Early Decision.

You were going to get into Duke Early Decision, and that would be it. There was an advantage to applying to Duke Early Decision. The Duke Regular Decision acceptance rate in the most recent application cycle was 4.1%. The Early Decision acceptance rate was much higher. This was not the plan.

If you applied to Vassar Early Decision, you were probably expecting to get in. The acceptance rate is high enough that strong students approach it with confidence, and since it’s Early Decision the admissions office at the college knows that you are a serious applicant. Aim for an ACT over 33 or a SAT over 1500.
