Since the 1950s, Ivy League schools have been using a secret ranking formula called the Academic Index (AI). The Academic Index was designed specifically to regulate athletic recruitment (in the Ivy League colleges, 15-20% of the first-year class is made up of recruited athletes for their sports teams).

However, across the Ivy League, the highest legacy rate we have ever seen is 30%. Since we have never seen an Ivy League school accept more than 30% of legacies, that means at these top schools the majority of legacies don’t get in. Penn is super tight-lipped about legacy admissions numbers. What does this mean?
