UGA Undergraduate Admissions Q & A

For the Fall 2023 class, UGA will be keeping the same essay questions as have had for the past few years. UGA will require two essays, a longer personal essay (250-650 words) and a shorter essay (200-300 words). In addition, the Fall 2023 application will open up on August 1 in order to align our opening with other institutions using the Common Application.

When deciding what college to attend as a pre-med student, one of the issues you want to consider is the quality of pre-med advising at a particular college. Most colleges have some type of pre-med advising for their students. The intent of this advising is to make sure the student is doing what they need to do to be a competitive candidate when applying for medical school.

I returned a couple of weeks ago from the IECA National Conference. I attended some great break-out sessions. One session was with admissions officers from the University of Rochester, University of Delaware, and Ohio Wesleyan. They were discussing how they make admissions decisions when they do not have a test score, i.e., in the land of test optional.

Modern medical schools are looking for students with various backgrounds and experiences. This diversity in medical school admissions is a big issue for several reasons. The first reason is that medical schools like to see diversity in the students they are admitting. While diversity includes such issues as race and ethnicity, it is viewed in a much broader context by medical schools.

The last ECA post commented on some issues arising out of the brief filed with the United States Supreme Court on May 2 by Students For Fair Admissions (SFFA) in its case alleging discrimination against Asian-American applicants to Harvard and UNC-Chapel Hill. There was one other issue from that brief that I intended to address, but inadvertently left out when I put the finishing touches on the post, trying to keep it from turning into a tome.
