Part of this gap comes from the changing role of standardizedtests, but it highlights a bigger issuethe growing divide between students who are actively preparing for college and those who are not. When spring or summer rolls around, its also a great time to start taking practice tests for the PSAT, ACT, or SAT.
10th Grade: Gaining Momentum Sophomore year is about refining academic and extracurricular focus while beginning standardizedtest preparation. StandardizedTesting : Take the PSAT for practice. Focus on activities that combine learning with enjoyment. Quality of involvement matters more than quantity.
Junior Year – Fall (September to November) Take the PSAT. The PSAT, or Preliminary SAT, is a standardizedtest that gives you a sneak peek at what the SAT will be like. Begin requesting recommendationletters.
standardizedtests! PSAT and Pre-ACT Many sophomores take the PSAT or the Pre-ACT through school. You don’t need to stress about this test too much, but it’s a good idea to at least have some familiarity with the format and content of the test. You may have a baseline score from the PSAT or Pre-ACT.
For example, if you maintain a high GPA, score well on standardizedtests, or demonstrate exceptional talent in music or sports, you might qualify for a merit scholarship. Academic Scholarships Academic scholarships reward students with outstanding grades, high standardizedtest scores, or other exceptional educational achievements.
Make a plan around SAT/ACT testing If you haven’t already, fall of your junior year is the time to map out your standardizedtesting plan. Although most colleges remain test optional following COVID, we recommend studying and sitting for the SAT or ACT at least once. Keep this in mind as you begin your junior year.
STANDARDIZEDTESTING. Don’t forget to arrange for standardizedtesting. The SSAT (Secondary School Admissions Test) is the most common test required for independent high school admissions. Letters of recommendation (typically two letters, one from an English teacher and one from a math teacher).

This New York Times article is a few weeks old, but we thought it was worth mentioning as juniors begin to think more about their options for teacher letters of recommendation. In 2022, 3 percent of test takers scored in this range. they’re able to identify growth not only in peaks reached, but also in obstacles overcome.
Take the PSAT and plan your test dates for the ACT or SAT; typically, you will take either of these standardizedtests for the first time during the winter or spring of your junior year. Confirm that your teachers have enough information and time to submit your letters of recommendation on time.
TESTING PRACTICE AND PREP FOR THE PSAT: You take it in October, and it helps you qualify for National Merit if you score high enough. PRACTICE AND PREP FOR THE ACT and SAT: Take a couple of practice tests and see which one feels better to you and which one you score higher on. It really doesn’t matter what it is.
