Colleges have COVID grade inflation too, and although students have learned less these past few years, retention rates have not dropped. Stuart Schmill, the Dean of Admissions and Student Financial Services at MIT, did a Q&A on MIT’s decision to reinstate their SAT/ACT requirement. MIT made this decision last spring.

Because MIT is consistently one of the most selective colleges in the world, to get into MIT you’ll need near perfect grades and SAT or ACT scores, strong extracurricular activity involvement demonstrating things like commitment to community and leadership, and essays that help you to stand out from other applicants.
Test-optional admissions should not change much how you approach your essays or resume although I can imagine letters of recommendation may be more important to provide context to your academic abilities and achievements. If you’re outside of the top 6%, I suggest submitting your SAT/ACT if it’s higher than 28 or 1350.
Remember, spots only open up when people leave that school, and they seem to have a pretty high retention rate. On their website, they say “we generally receive between 150-200 transfer applications, and we admit five to twenty candidates.”
